3 Mile Lake

3 Mile Lake (Google calls it Spring Bayou) is a large marsh area on the backside of Matagorda beach. This is a good area for birding and fishing. It is accessed from the Beach but typically requires a 4×4 vehicle.

Getting There:

You will need a 4×4 vehicle in order to drive to this site. From Matagorda head south on FM 2031 over the bridge. Drive past all the houses then take a left on Dunes Road. There will be a sign that says “Public Beach Access”. Dunes road will dead end onto the beach. Take a left and drive approximately 1.25 miles and you should see 3 Mile Cut open up to your left. Drive toward the cut. This will lead you back behind the dunes and to good access sites. Stay on obvious trails in this area. It is illegal to drive on any vegetation on and behind the beach.

Parking & Facilities

There is plenty of parking on the beach and next to 3 Mile Lake. There are no other facilities.

We just visited 7/25 - 7/28, and the beach was great! We do not have a 4x4, so it was nice to drive right on the beach. We parked very close to the entrance and then backed down towards the water. No crowds was the best part!

I know this is three weeks later, but has anyone been out there recently? Has there been a lot of rain that way? Wanted to go this weekend but didn’t want to deal with mosquitoes and hardly any sand from the rain.

Had a great time this past week, no problems!!

I think I love your shirt!

like that shirt!
