3 Mile Lake

3 Mile Lake (Google calls it Spring Bayou) is a large marsh area on the backside of Matagorda beach. This is a good area for birding and fishing. It is accessed from the Beach but typically requires a 4×4 vehicle.

Getting There:

You will need a 4×4 vehicle in order to drive to this site. From Matagorda head south on FM 2031 over the bridge. Drive past all the houses then take a left on Dunes Road. There will be a sign that says “Public Beach Access”. Dunes road will dead end onto the beach. Take a left and drive approximately 1.25 miles and you should see 3 Mile Cut open up to your left. Drive toward the cut. This will lead you back behind the dunes and to good access sites. Stay on obvious trails in this area. It is illegal to drive on any vegetation on and behind the beach.

Parking & Facilities

There is plenty of parking on the beach and next to 3 Mile Lake. There are no other facilities.

For those of us that have an all wheel drive mid size suv. Where would be the best place to set up for beach play for kids? We come out several times every year but recently traded in our truck so no 4×4 this year...

Has the entrance to the public beach access been plowed so you can actually get your car on the beach? The last few times we have tried (we do not have four wheel drive) the sand was too deep to even get our car on the beach thru the public entrance.
