3 Mile Lake

3 Mile Lake (Google calls it Spring Bayou) is a large marsh area on the backside of Matagorda beach. This is a good area for birding and fishing. It is accessed from the Beach but typically requires a 4×4 vehicle.

Getting There:

You will need a 4×4 vehicle in order to drive to this site. From Matagorda head south on FM 2031 over the bridge. Drive past all the houses then take a left on Dunes Road. There will be a sign that says “Public Beach Access”. Dunes road will dead end onto the beach. Take a left and drive approximately 1.25 miles and you should see 3 Mile Cut open up to your left. Drive toward the cut. This will lead you back behind the dunes and to good access sites. Stay on obvious trails in this area. It is illegal to drive on any vegetation on and behind the beach.

Parking & Facilities

There is plenty of parking on the beach and next to 3 Mile Lake. There are no other facilities.

High Tide Warning! We are experiencing 16mph onshore winds in Matagorda today. The tide is already high. The forecast for tomorrow is for 35+MPH winds which we expect will drive the tide even higher than today. It is possible the tide will push all the way to the dunes overnight and tomorrow. We recommend you pay close attention to the conditions if you plan to head down beach today or Saturday. Be especially careful if you plan to camp on the beach overnight. Also the driving conditions are 4x4 only right now. ... See MoreSee Less
